Properties: Also called (methyl chloroform), it's a clear, colorless liquid with a faint ether smell. Melting point: -32.5℃ (it might vary a bit in different sources, like -35℃). Boiling point: 74 - 76℃ (it evaporates easily). It doesn't dissolve in water, but it's a bit soluble in organic solvents like ethanol and ether. It dissolves well in volatile oils. It's stable at normal temperatures and not easy to catch fire (the flash point is around 35℃). But at high temperatures or under strong light, it might break down and give off toxic gases like hydrogen chloride. It reacts with alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and powders of reactive metals (such as magnesium and aluminum), and that could cause it to break down. If it encounters an open flame, high heat, or strong light, it might burn, producing highly toxic phosgene and hydrogen chloride fumes.
Functions: It's a versatile organic solvent. It can be used as a metal degreaser and cleaner, to check for leaks in electronic parts, precision instruments, and metal welds. It can be made into flame-resistant coating materials, cutting oil coolants, and low-toxic, non-flammable adhesives. It's an intermediate for making organic compounds like vinylidene chloride and 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane, and is used to produce chemicals like chloroacetic acid. It can be used to extract resins, dyes, and fragrances, and to clean fibers. It can be used as a dry cleaning agent, aerosol spray agent, printing machine cleaner, and as a solvent for making DAP resin with low surface tension.
